Fascinating article. Those are a few things I have questioning myself for quite too long. It is beyond my mind that those who claim to follow scientific arguments are distorting everything and training people to think inside a box of fear. Thank you, Dr. McFillin.

Great post! I liked seeing cognitive biases attached to the names mentioned.

A commercial case could be made with names like Edward Bernays. From his work "Propaganda":

"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country."

Did you attend school? Whilst I think you put forward a cohesive argument, I have mixed opinions about saying that school only teaches obedience and compliance as this means you are completely dismissing all those fantastic teachers within schools that do encourage curiosity. What about the music teachers? What about all the creative arts teachers? All they all just cogs in the compliance machine also 🤔

Yes- I attended school of course. The article does not convey that school ONLY teaches obedience. Of course there is a lot of academic knowledge that is attained and there is a minority of teachers who buck the system. With that said... the entire structure of the public education system is based off a model of obedience to authority and training students to be active participants in the post industrial world. From factory bells, to the focus on rote learning, test taking, rule following, the teacher as the authority figure and most importantly the overt and covert means of punishing non-compliance. Calling out in class, questioning the teacher, struggling to focus on non-stimulating tasks and the labeling and drugging of students who struggling in such a restrictive environment is the greater point. In fact, for many of us who remember Math classes... it wasn't just about getting the answer right.. .you needed to follow the steps they told you to follow. What does this teach? Those who are successful in these environments are really strong at rote memorization and regurgitating back what the teacher/curriculum wants them to know. Our medical curriculum follows this. model. Those who struggle tend to be those who require active exploration, need to be outside, question authority, become easily bored by the material, are creative, social and learn differently.
