Don't forget about what they are doing with children and teens. They are being taught to label all the big, normal emotions of childhood and the upheavals of adolescence as "depression," "anxiety," and "PTSD" and then told these conditions are lifelong, something you never recover from. Even worse, they are doing this to kids during the most vulnerable stages of identity development. It's like when the tobacco companies targeted kids in their advertisements so they could hook them young and have lifelong customers.
Hallelujah. Put together perfectly my shared views on this matter. I've been medicalized for 2 decades. But coming back for my turn now. F*ck these people.
I love the humor with which you write. It helped to get me through this very serious topic. I'd like to add that at some point in our culture, parenting changed so that we could not bear to watch our children suffer the slightest mental anguish. We felt like bad parents if we didn't rush to our child's aid and this has led us to reach out to our doctors and accept whatever magic pill they prescribed. We don't give our kids a chance to sit with the uncomfortable feelings and work through them. This is not to say some kids don't need medical help or that parents should cruelly ignore what their kids are dealing with these days. There is a fine art to being a good parent and sometimes that includes permission to "screw up" and "fess up" so our kids learn to be resilient.
Yeah I am old enough to have done major recovery work on sexual abuse during the Judith Herman, Trauma and Recovery era when things made sense and we got to emerge healed and stronger, most of us without medication, even temporarily.
No such thing as mental illness as we don't understand what the mind is, what there is though,is difference and not fitting well with the crowd can cause immense suffering - we don't need more 'awareness' of difference as that has always been there, more acceptance of variation from base would be more beneficial
Ironically I just recorded a video on this topic this weekend but hadn’t shared it. I know the points you made will make some people angry, defensive and upset. But your article contained a great amount of truth that needs to be heard. This is the first I have read your work. Are you a physician? Thanks for an important article.
So sorry you endured this. It’s horrible but people do invalidate victims and use this kind of thing to cover their own transgressions. I hope you have had good support and help healing from that abuse on top of SA. So sad and wrong.

BAM. Your descriptive language elevated me to a new level this morning!
So revealing on why the mental health topic has exploded in the last 4 years and not in a good way. Now many claim it as cover for transgressions.
Kudos on writing so effectively!
Another absolute banger, wow. Thanks doc.

Your best article yet!

I can’t believe how things have changed!
