Hallelujah! Finally someone in the mental health field said it.

I reluctantly went to therapy, after a SSRI prescription from my family doctor, of course, in 2022.

“Hmm, sounds like you have depression” she said.

*Goes home, googles depression*

“Persistent low mood with no good cause”

Wait, what? I have “good cause”!!

2008: prenatal depression

2009 -2012: postnatal depression

2012: dad announces cancer diagnosis

2013: dad dies

2013-2019: vicious, bitter, and very expensive legal battle over dads estate

2019: marriage breaks down

2020 - 2022: Covid, and all the devastation (mental, emotional and financial) that it wrought on the owner of a small pub

14 straight years of life kicking my butt, and you think I have “no good cause”???

The therapist depressed me even more. After four sessions of chat, where I mostly sat there thinking, “Hang on. We used to do this with our girlfriends over coffee and now it costs $180 an hour to do this with a stranger??? And I don’t even get cake?!?”; I discontinued.

I got off the pills, and chose to just walk through it. It hurt, but it didn’t hurt more than the past few years already had.

Am I “better” now? No. I will never again be a delightful little bundle of sunshine and lollipops. But that’s ok, I’m in a place I’m comfortable with.

Winston Churchill once said something akin to “if no one has ever hated you, it means you’ve never stood up for anything in your life”. Similarly, I believe at my age (56), if you don’t carry at least a little bit of sadness somewhere inside, you’ve never truly opened your eyes to what life is doing around you.

It was only yesterday that I read a remarkable essay, here on substack, that mirrors the ideas in this one.

The lady spoke about her dissatisfaction with therapy and the notion that treating her thoughts and behaviors as though she was broken was non-productive.

It's an eye-opener.

It is my experience that deep feeling people are the ones who produce long lived inspirations in music, art, books, poetry, theater and even classic movies. Most productive artists in every genre are usually tortured by big emotions. I guess it's the price we pay to add on to humanity rather than subtract.

I’m an almost 44 year old woman and this is exactly how I have always felt. I am prone to melancholy, and people have always tried to “help me” or tell me I’m too serious. It troubles me greatly to observe apathy and lack of thought to those things which should move us to our core. However, as a Christ follower I know that feelings can’t be our guide. I also know that the Lord gives some of us thorns of one type or another to bear. I think this is because for our individual journey’s He knows that the suffering is what will shape our hearts for Him even more than joy. It is exhausting though to exist in such a deep state of perpetual thought, so I have to be cognizant of the common graces and general revelations of God all around me. After-all, Christ knew suffering. He wept. He knows.

"Suffering is what will shape our hearts" (beautiful comment).

I think it's the entire point of human existence.

We all have our cross to bear and no one gets through life unscathed. It's only through the experiences of suffering that we learn and develop higher emotion.

We could never truly appreciate joy if we've never known despair.

We have medicalised normal human emotion and now Big Pharma/Big Medicine get to make bank on it, while inficting actual damage with toxic drugs that cause real psychological injury.

"May cause suicide or homicidal thoughts" should have been our first clue.

Simply put I offer the $100,000 Challenge for Children's Charity to the entire population of Psychology/Psychiatry: Pass a Sniff Test using own rules against, the kids get the cash

Simple Logic Simple Integrity Exercise, Objective Hypocrisy Test

Daily challenge, started at $1,000, went to $10,000, now a cool $100,000

Not one person has even attempted to collect, not 1

Once you understand the paradigm, this should make perfect sense to you:

"Narcissist" is a word salad word, in a control/devalue/abuse paradigm motivated by profits/power/supply

A psychological tool to make it easier to abuse another human being

Please check Buddhism for abuse of people: Is that acceptable?

Is it disease or is it survival?

Arguments like this always remind of a documentary I watched about the Iranian revolution. A woman in it told the story of finding out her husband had been executed but then immediately her baby started crying because he was hungry so she had to switch her focus because she had children to take care of.

You talk about compartmentalizing in superficial terms, socializing with friends and being productive at a job, but you miss what's happening underneath the veneer. How we form relationships and community with shared laughter and enjoyment. And how the worker who continues to work when bad things are happening is doing so because they need to provide food and shelter for themselves and their families.

It's easy to detach from the notion work when we talk about modern corporate jobs, but when you think about older forms of labor like farming, you can understand why the ability to focus on what you can control instead of the things you can't control is important. Crops don't wait for you to feel better. Food needs to be harvested whether a war is happening or not.

And when bad things happen to us or in close proximity to us, we need the community we created in those moments of localized peace.

Human beings have never lived in a utopia. We have always had to live in a cruel and indifferent universe. We've always had to be productive and build relationships while bad things happen around us. For our long term survival.

In addition to the valid points you make about society, for me as a psychotherapist two takeaways from the case of the young poet are: a therapist must initially meet patients where they are at instead of immediately trying to disabuse them of their views (I find that CBT, unless practiced empathically, can risk such a pitfall); and that psychiatric symptoms tend to be disguised strengths that good therapists can help patients reframe to generate positive change.

Bravo! Brilliant! Absolutely! If you want to see a really good read on the system making us more crazy look up Madonna Badger. She will blow you away with her story. She’s able to tell one of the most horrifying stories one can think of, and just wipe the tears from her eyes as she talks. And of course, when she was struggling with grief, they medicated her and put her in the hospital… Anyway, thank you, thank you thank you. I’m a therapist and I know we need more sitting in their darkness while listening with Light. I am subscribing today Thank you so much! If we stop pharmaceutical advertisement, we might actually be able to support people when they’re relatively happy or terribly sad… It would just be the Evan flow of the human journey.

Whenever I'm in Germany and watch the television I'm amazed at how many advertisements are for: beauty products - aimed mainly at women; vitamins, muscle tablets or creams for soreness, headache, sleep problems, even some natural products like Echinacea; but, products that come from some producer of either Pharma or Natural - I'm careful to say Natural but non the less I'm surprised at how many advertisements there are for so called 'human health'. Last weekend I was in Berlin and watched some television and there was an advertisement that was for some kind of 'immune booster'. It caught my eye because it, hard to explain, kind of seemed 'innocent' but in another way was like 'help your immune system by taking these'. I thought to myself that it would be easy to say, "I need that because I've been sick and this might help." I felt that it as if they wanted to hook people and then that meant they sold products and then they had a regular stream of income. When in fact how does one even know if ones 'immune system' is not working (hahaha). I have no proof of all this and it is purely based on my 'feeling'.

I sometimes think, "do people buy anything else in this country?"

Of course they do, but....

Wow! Thank you. This reminds me of the time my sister tried to commit suicide. I was always the one who could say, "Hey, this shit sucks. So, while it sucks, let's sing and drink a beer." My sister wasn't like that and still isn't. Gratefully, she wasn't successful at ending her life. And, gratefully, I no longer grab a beer to help me process my emotions. Now, at my age of 42, I will admit I have thought about ending my life more than once. It's strange, for me, to have so many vivid memories of other lifetimes and places and then wake to this morbid nightmare the culture has come to be. In all of my lifetimes, I have been a very strong character who challenges rules and, specifically, challenges rules in religious, spiritual settings. I remember meeting a man who saw me and loved me anyway. They changed my story and slandered me. Waking to that, you better bet, I drank some beers. You better bet I thought of ending my life. Who wants to feel the weight of their truth while almost everyone you know believes something entirely different? There are lifetimes feeding what we could call a mental health episode. Lifetimes. I look forward to the world accepting more holistic approaches which includes spirituality as a tool for expansive healing. And, healing in this context means: remembering. Sometimes, we just need a friend as we remember the extreme situations we lived through and are living through. We need the kind of friend who can remind us of the big, hearted picture which is as expansive as this universe we all share.

Do people realize how many therapists sitting in the therapist job have never been to therapy themselves? It should be a mandate -in order to get your license you must be in therapy. Not supervision where you’re yapping about your client but where you’re sitting down doing your work.
