Powerfully poignant piece, thank you Dr McFillin. I deeply resonate. As a social worker and parent there have been so many decisions that have gone against the status quo or so-called expertise. Following the rules because authority dictates it is not something I have gotten good at. And since my daughter’s arrival in the world, I find myself unlearning even more. I deeply appreciate this affirmation for the values of care, empathy, concern and compassion that I hold as the compass of truth.
I’m not disagreeing with you, but I would like it if you expounded on why the standard definition of sociopath that you used here is valid, but the standard definitions of conditions you’re worried about, such as ADHD, are pseudoscientific
In short- Because the identification of psychopathy/sociopathy has extensive scientific validation and is documented throughout history where ADHD does not. The former is widely accepted and must be considered in matters of public safety. The former is a modern construction, has been commercialized to prop of an industry, is controversial, and has poor scientifically validity and reliability.
I appreciate your comprehensive explanation of the prescription plague. What would you recommend for children coming out of trauma? It would seem we're wired to be productive and to be outdoors. Are there programs that employ such an approach?
