Brilliant, nail and head again! I've been witness to this exact-same authority-driven wave-away in many areas of modern science. It can be quite infuriating.
I led a clinic for 32 years and rarely referred clients to get a pill. We also ran two inpatient units and also did our best to avoid meds. Our residents were in individual and group treatments for eight hours daily vs a regular pill drenched inpatient unit of two hours daily.
Every resident attended our daily training classes and were able to be supportive of each other 24 x 7. We call it, ‘training as treatment’ and it was powerfully positive.
I had trained churches to be healthy, uplifting communities for several years so I took my insights into psych wards and it worked. I am still using the research of training as treatment to equip churches and it is more effective than individual counseling.
People need to hear this debate. Thank you for shedding a bright light on the questionable foundation for psychiatric medication of behavioral health challenges. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your voice in these dialogues.
This is eloquently written and such a concise summary of the state of medicine not just in mental health, but across the board. It is indeed a “crisis of the credentialed”! Well said! I’m thankful for your voice on this subject and for your work to bring about a greater awareness for thinking physicians but especially for parents! We unintentionally harm our children when we accept anything based on its face value or because “experts say”. Never realizing we have misplaced our trust and followed advice from Big Pharma automatons. Sharyl Attkisson wrote a very good book on this subject titled Follow the Science. Like you, she goes deep into uncovering the scientific tricks performed by industry to perpetuate harm in just about every aspect of our wellbeing. She would be an excellent guest. Thank you again for all your work, Dr. McFillin.
This episode was dynamite! I truly enjoy and appreciate your work Dr. McFillin! I am more informed, aware, and equipped to discuss the mental health fraud and misinformation we continue to battle each and every day. As an undergraduate studying psychology and deeply ingrained in debating research and the harms within psychiatry, your work and others who are pioneering this sphere of academic scrutiny are invaluable. Thank you!!!
Girgis literally wrote a paper in 2010 on how to take money from the drug companies, for young psychiatrists to read. Read it here. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20360328/ Jeffrey Lieberman was a co-author, who lied brazenly about taking drug co $. Girgis is not ignorant, he is enveloped in self-deception, and his handlers at Big Pharma reinforce his self-deception about the pills. I would open the debate between him and Moncrieff by asking why the public should believe anything he says, when he is so obviously on the payroll of Big Pharma.
Reminds me of the Covid thugs telling us “don’t do your own research” and of course, “trust the science”. How many other things have we been lied to about? The amyloid plaques theory of Alzheimer’s being debunked as useless also comes to mind. 😡😡😡
Oy, you said it: his “breathtaking arrogance”… which is criminally and nauseatingly common in our culture of professional elitism now, and it is why you are doing such a profound service with these podcasts and your writing. The mental health field is desperate for a deep, major transformation—by way of consciousness, not exploitative spin. You’re a hugely helpful leader here. Thank you.
I wish you were around when my family was destroyed by Shrinks, Meds, Quack experiments and the precious sentiments of family and community gaslighters.
I'm a fan of your general perspective, but it's inaccurate to frame psychiatry as arguing that depression is caused by a serotonin deficiency. There's no clear understanding of how SSRIs work. Serotonin is involved somehow but it's probably because it effects other neurochemicals in a downstream way: that's why it takes 2-6 weeks for SSRIs to have an effect even though they raise brain serotonin levels within a couple hours. Here's a very readable overview:
We're all caught up in our biases and bubbles and surrounded by corrupt incentives that seem to bring out the worst in human beings. Its a shame the tone wasn't more conducive to further engagement and debate - I doubt very much he will agree to debate J.M after this.

This sounds interesting. Are you able to supply some references describing your training?
Thanks Roger. This has really opened my eyes. I appreciate you writing this piece.

Bravo! Another scathing expose.

“How are we still trusting the same authorities who've presided over this catastrophic failure?
Those of us awake during the recent plague are NOT trusting the medical mafia and its corrupted research and academic sycophants.
“How are we not demanding answers from the people whose "clear data" has led us into this nightmare?”
Why request justice from those who yield the injustice?
Again, a thousand thanks, Roger. 🙏x1000!
